Software-Defined Networking

During the OMG meeting in Reston, VA in March 2013, the Middleware and
Related Services Platform Task Force created a new working group for
Software-Defined Networking (SDN), chaired by Manish Patil of Dell. This
new working group was established to address an urgent need to set a
vendor-neutral global standard for SDN, based on an open
multi-stakeholder model with consensus and meritocracy.
An approach to building computer networks that separate and remove
elements of systems, SDN allows system administrators to quickly
contribute to network connections rather than manually configure
programs. This has become increasingly important with the advent of
virtualization- which an enterprise data center may need to create and
configure virtual machines remotely, and configure firewall rules or
network addresses in response. SDN allows network administrators to have
programmable central control of network traffic without requiring
physical access to the network’s hardware devices. Standards development
for SDN enables companies to innovate on top of that standard and create
added value for their customers. The standards created in the best
interest of the SDN community mean that no single vendor will control
hardware or software direction- and will give customers choice.

The group intends to develop a roadmap within the coming weeks
for standardization, with first standards to be completed in
2013. If you would like to join the SDN Working Group, email
