Summary: Problem:

Extend the XML to allow optional relationships (i.e. relationships with a cardinality of 0..1). This way it is always possible to explicitly allow NULL pointer relations, even in case of predefined mapping. 

Solution:

An optional relationship should be accompanied by a boolean field that specifies whether the foreign keyfields should be interpreted or not.
