Summary: On Page 23 of the UML Infrastructure Spec. it is stated, that "The multiplicity of an association end is suppressed if it is ‘*’ (default in UML).". This implies that omitting to define the multipl. of an association end A means that the multiplicity of A is * (between zero and infinity). However this contradicts most books I know and some examples in the specification itself.
