Issue 17349: spec should provide a simple library of datatypes for use in UML and data modeling (dtv-rtf) Source: Adaptive (Mr. Pete Rivett, pete.rivett(at)adaptive.com) Nature: Uncategorized Issue Severity: Summary: This spec should provide a simple library of datatypes for use in UML and data modeling. This is present in many physical data standards (e.g. SQL/JDBC, XML Schema) but is lacking in OMG for platform independent modeling. That would include types such as: - Date - DateTime - TimeStamp - Duration Resolution: The FTF did not reach agreement on what is needed for "platform-independent modeling". The specification provides two levels of platform-independent classes. The conceptual level classes are ‘duration’ and ‘time interval’. The corresponding platform-independent representation classes are ‘duration value’, and ‘time coordinate’ (aka ‘timestamp’) and its subtypes, which include date, date time, and time of day coordinates. It is not clear that these classes do not satisfy the issue. The intent of the issue appears to be that there should be a UML package that comprises exactly these, perhaps re-declared as UML datatypes, and perhaps structured as a SysML library module. Such a package might be a suitable addition to clause 18, which explicitly specifies exchange forms for such datatypes. The FTF decided to defer this issue to the first Revision Task Force in the hope of getting clarification for the intended content and agreement on the appropriate structure, and in the hope of getting participating experts who will formalize that content and structure in a form suitable for "platform-independent modeling". It is not clear what is wanted in terms of formal UML model elements. We really could have benefited from active participation of the interested parties. -Ed -- Edward J.
