Issue 17361: Attribute URI/URL should be renamed and made optional (updm-2-0-rtf) Source: Atego (Mr. Simon Moore, simon.moore(at)atego.com) Nature: Revision Severity: Critical Summary: On behalf of the OMG MIWG: There is an attribute on UPDMElement (which many things derived from) called "URL/URI ". This contains a slash character and space (on the end) which are illegal as an XML name, but no xmiName override is provided. Also it should be optional since not all objects would require them for the model to be valid. This is blocking validation of XMI files and therefore requires some kind of urgent solution in UPDM 2.0.1. Our proposal would be to change the name to "URI" and make it optional. URI: If I remember, the "I" is for identifier, which doesn't have to exist or at least doesn't have to exist anywhere on the web. But URL: If I remember, the "L" is for locator and it is implied that it exists somewhere. So, conceptually a URL is a subtype (subclass) of URI. [So is URN, .URN defines an item's identity, while the URL provides a method for finding it.] Nice graphic: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c3/URI_Euler_Diagram_no_lone_URIs.svg So, the text specifying .URI/URL. is, in practice the same as specifying .URI.. I should be able to substitute a more specific URL for a more general URI. So, your suggestion is wonderful. But, one could argue for it being mandatory. Every object in the universe needs some indicator (whether stated or not).
