structures.

differentiate between versions and revisions.
7 Control update and release.
7 Provide overviews of the relationships among products, product
specifications, process specifications, maintenance specifications,
and the engineering and management tasks that create, use and modify
them. This should include the ability to share revision levels across
parent documents and their offspring.

[Motorola views a revision as a minor, incremental change and may be
"internal" (an ECO as it moves through its lifecycle. A version is
what gets published.]
