Issue 5536: Issue of aligning ASTM and OMG LECIS specifications (lecis-ftf) Source: Pfizer (Dr.Tony Parsons, tony_parsons@sandwich.pfizer.com) Nature: Uncategorized Issue Severity: Summary: The OMG LECIS specification, it has come to light, is in some cases either extending or being constrained by the existing ASTM LECIS specification which is not due for review until next year. As Fred Waskiewicz, Director of Standards, pointed out this is a more substantive issue with several possible resolutions. The simplest of which is "to have the FTF complete OMG LECIS for publication and have a RTF (or more probably, a RFP) address the alignment issues". I suppose the question might then be raised would publication at this stage serve any useful purpose if we want to ensure ASTM and OMG standards are completely aligned via another RFP or wider consultative process? Resolution: see discussion Revised Text: No revisions - procedural question Actions taken: July 10, 2002: received issue December 11, 2002: closed issue Discussion: I would prefer to have the FTF complete OMG LECIS for publication and then have a RTF or RFP address potential alignment issues. We all know that the current version of the ASTM LECIS spec has a number of problems that need to be worked out in a follow-up revision of the ASTM spec. Many, if not all, of the problems with the original ASTM spec have been addressed/resolved in the OMG spec. I think it would be easier to complete the OMG spec for publication and then revive the ASTM working group to update the ASTM spec by incorporating some of the solutions from the OMG spec. Dorothe Steidinger and I have already started to look into the ASTM revision process. I think I have copied in all interested parties - please forward if not. Thanks to Thorsten for posting the first two issues. The responsibility of the Finalization Task Force is designed to prepare an adopted submission for publication as an available specification for a period no longer than a year. All issues raised must be addressed with satisfactory resolutions. The Recommendation and Report Deadline for this FTF was succesfully extended at the DTC meeting at the Orlando meeting to October 7th 2002. http://www.omg.org/techprocess/meetings/schedule/LECIS_FTF.html#Recommendati on_and_Report_Deadline Many thanks to Karl Konnerth of Incyte Genomics for proposing this motion and exercising Pfizer's proxy vote at Orlando. I will need to check the procedures but I think tackling the holistic picture of alignment is best done before delving into the minutiae. Apologies if you receive this more than once as I will also automatically post to the OMG lecis-ftf@omg.org mailing list.
