Discussion: To: James Odell Cc: uml2-superstructure-ftf@omg.org Subject: Re: Glossary removal and Ballot 11 X-Mailer: Lotus Notes Release 6.0.2CF1 June 9, 2003 From: Branislav Selic Date: Wed, 24 Mar 2004 03:33:43 -0500 X-MIMETrack: Serialize by Router on D25ML05/25/M/IBM(Release 6.0.2CF1|June 9, 2003) at 03/24/2004 03:33:55, Serialize complete at 03/24/2004 03:33:55 Jim, I am really sorry to hear that this issue has been raised now. However, here is the pertinent history: (1) The issue was discussed at length in the Anaheim meeting and a straw poll indicated a preference for removing the glossary because of all the problems related to it (how did it match the descriptions in the class definitions? which concepts should be there? what format should it take? is it normative? how is it synchronized when definitions change? etc.). It was pointed out that in its present form it was actually quite problematic and often misleading -- because it was not fully updated when a new release of UML came out. That is, it created more problems than it solved. The minutes of this meeting were published. (2) Based on that, I sent out a resolution proposal to issue 6211 with an explicit note that warned that it includes a proposal to remove the entire glossary. The resolution was published at least 10 days prior to start of ballot. (3) We voted on the resolution to 6211 in ballot 9 (see below) and the resolution was adopted. Here is the text of the issue and resolution: ---------------------------------- OMG Issue No: 6211 Title: UML 2 Super/Spec/completing mandatory sections Source: International Business Machines (Mr. Bran Selic, bselic@ca.ibm.com) Summary: The new OMG document structure requires certain mandatory sections (Scope, Confromance, Normative References, Terms and Definitions, and Symbols). Disposition: Resolved ---------------------------------- I can give you a call if you like to discuss this (I am currently in Europe, which is 6 hours ahead of Ann Arbor). Regards, Bran James Odell 03/23/2004 05:52 PM To Branislav Selic/Ottawa/IBM@IBMCA, cc Subject Glossary removal and Ballot 11 Bran, In Ballot 11, there are two glossary-related issues (6459, 6447) that indicate: "The glossary has been removed as a result of the resolution to issue 6211." 1) Kabira is STRONGLY against removing the glossary. 2) Issue 6211 has to do with the new OMG document structure requiring certain mandatory sections -- not removing sections such as the glossary. 3) Issue 6211 is not resolved.
