Issue 8143: Section: 10.4 (uml2-rtf) Source: (, ) Nature: Clarification Severity: Minor Summary: Table 8 Node Reference says Node has keyword options <<device>> and <<execution environment>> but these are not mentioned in the Node section nor are they diagrammed anywhere. Resolution: see above Revised Text: Remove the sentence “Has keyword options «device» and «execution environment».” from the Node row of Table 8, page 224, section 10.4. Remove the sentence “A Device is notated by a Node annotated with the stereotype «device»” from the Notation subsection, page 217, section 10.3.7. Editor’s note: This was changed to the correct phrasing instead of removing the entire sentence. Delete the third paragraph of the Semantics subsection on page 222, section 10.3.11, that begins with the text “Non-normative examples of nodes …” Actions taken: January 26, 2005: received issue August 23, 2006: closed issue Discussion: There appears to be substantial confusion in the text regarding whether “device” and “execution environment” are stereotypes of Node or subtypes of Node. The proposed changes favor the subtypes of Node interpretation of these items because it results in far less drastic changes to the text. The issue references the text “Has keyword options «device» and «execution environment».” in the Node row of Table 8 on page 224, section 10.4. Rather than being stereotypes as the offending text indicates, Device and ExecutionEnvironment are defined as subtypes of Node in sections 10.3.7 and 10.3.8, respectively. Note also that the text “A Device is notated by a Node annotated with the stereotype «device»” in the Notation section on page 217 is inconsistent with the representation of devices as a subtype of Node and should be removed as well. In section 10.3.11, page 222, the third paragraph of the Semantics section suggests that Nodes can be labeled with «application server», «client workstation», «mobile device», and «embedded device». To be consistent with the subtypes of Node interpretation, the former two of these prototypes would be better applied to the Device class and the latter two, the ExecutionEnvironment class. Rather than moving these examples stereotypes, it seems better to just remove them.
