Issue 9585: SCA 2.2.x Backward Compatability (swradio-rtf) Source: L-3 Communications, Communication Systems - West (Mr. Mark Scoville, mark.scoville@L-3com.com) Nature: Uncategorized Issue Severity: Summary: SDRF, NASA, JPEO have all indicated that the probabilty of broader adoption of the PIM/PSM For Software Radio Components would be greater if it were fully backward compatible with the SCA 2.2.x specifications. This issue simply stated is to request that the PIM/PSM be modified such that it, as a framework deployed and running, can run any SCA 2.2.x waveform or application without modification, to the full extent it can run on a SCA 2.2.x framework. Resolution: Revised Text: Actions taken: April 21, 2006: received issue April 19, 2007: closed no change Discussion: Discussion: Backward compatibility is a large topic. To respond to this it will be necessary to issue an RFI to more completely collect requirements. A couple approaches could be: 1. Build in backward compatibility (per specified requirements) 2. Inasmuch as there is little or no definition of backward compatibility within the SCA itself, that the JTRS CP process be used by industry to address a convergence of JTRS Increment 2 and P2SRC technologies, particularly given the matching vision of both the SCA and the MDA (interoperability, portability, reusability). Therefore the RTF will develop an RFI and send it out. Sorry for the flurry of email. I am done now. Have a good weekend. -- SUPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: The SWRADIO CF Resource is different than the SCA CF Resource interface therefore there is no backwards compatibility. Optimizations were done to enhance deployment behavior. The same SCA waveform model could be used for a swradio but code would be generated differently. For existing SCA WFs that want to migrate to a swradio solution there are two choices. 1.If someone was using a tool like ours then A. Use Different Component generator, SWRadio CF Generator instead of SCA on the waveform model B. Recompile, the waveform implementation code is backwards compatible and works with new component framework, no additional work. 2.If someone was not using a tool like ours then A. Reverse engineer the sca SAD file B. Forward Engineer the model C. Manual severe the waveform implementation code from sca infrastructure and hook to new generated implementation code. For existing SCA CFs, there are slight ApplicationFactory and Application changes to work with new waveform. Mainly in the area of port connections and disconnections. One could take the SWRadio spec and further constraint that every component in the Assembly has to be resource components as currently in the SCA instead of allowing for lighter weight components than resources. Without this constraint then ApplicationFactory and Application would change slightly to ensure a component supports lifecycle, propertyset, interfaces. -- -----Original Message----- From: Scoville, Mark @ CSW-SLC Sent: Friday, April 21, 2006 9:50 AM To: 'issues@omg.org' Subject: SCA 2.2.x Backward Compatability SDRF, NASA, JPEO have all indicated that the probabilty of broader adoption of the PIM/PSM For Software Radio Components would be greater if it were fully backward compatible with the SCA 2.2.x specifications. Suggested paths: 1) new RTF, 2) RFP/RFC as Jerry recommends, 3) impact study. The decisions being made here should be based on a more solid business case. What does the market for the implementations of the spec look like right now? Has any corporation fully implemented it? Based on what business case? What impact is it having on the commercial community (numbers)? DoD? MoD? etc. Are there any signed end radio users yet? And so on. My travels so far this year have brought me to the opinion that without the JPEO and SDRF endorsement, the PIM/PSM is going to be a tough sell. At the outset, a new standard does not need that kind of hurtle. We need to clear the way of obstacles as much as possible to ensure its success. -m- -----Original Message----- From: Jerry Bickle [mailto:Jerry.Bickle@prismtech.com] Sent: Friday, April 21, 2006 1:53 PM To: Demirbilek, Tansu; swradio-rtf@omg.org Cc: Dominick Paniscotti Subject: RE: issue 9585 -- SW Radio RTF issue I believe this issue is outside the boundaries of a RTF, which means a RFP or RFC is needed since you are talking totally new functionality or drastically changing existing interfaces for a specific implementation of one domain. ------------------------------------------ Jerry Bickle Chief Scientist, SDR Products 6511 Constitution Drive Fort Wayne, IN 46804 1 260-436-7168 (Work) 1 260-436-6708 (Fax) 1 260-249-8162 (Mobile) www.prismtech.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Demirbilek, Tansu [mailto:ademirbi@mc.com] Sent: Friday, April 21, 2006 3:33 PM To: Jerry Bickle; swradio-rtf@omg.org Cc: Dominick Paniscotti Subject: RE: issue 9585 -- SW Radio RTF issue RTF does not have to close this issue since it came in after the comments deadline.
