Design-Driven
Development: Good Only If Done Well
March, 2003 Over the last four years, development tool suppliers have
devoted a great amount of attention to two key design standards: UML
(Unified Modeling Language) and MDA (Model-Driven Architecture). These
standards are the spearheads of a supplier effort to increase the
importance of design tools and design in users' development processes. Two
key barriers to the success of this effort are the enormous gap between
high-level design standards and low-level, real-world Java coding, and
strong developer resistance to the "formalism," or over-tight
control, that design tools tend to impose on their users. Nevertheless,
Aberdeen believes that the new design-driven development can bring major
benefits in programmer productivity, software quality, and flexibility,
but only if implemented carefully - and not imposed in inappropriate
situations. --Wayne Kernochan, Aberdeen Group, Insight

June 2001, Application Development Advisor, Paul May
The OMG’s Corba hasn’t been talked about much recently, outside
of mission-critical developments in key vertical markets. But now,
explains Paul May, the organisation is trying to reposition itself
at the centre of interoperability with the Model Driven
Architecture.

Design
Your Application Once, Build It On Any Platform
April 2001, InformationWeek, Kristina Joukhadar
If Java's mantra is "Write once, run anywhere," the mantra
of the Object Management Group's new Model Driven Architecture
specification should be "Design once, build it on any
platform." The spec's goal is to make enterprise systems
technology-agnostic.
CORBA
In Context.
Cutter Consortium, Tom Welsh
By any reasonable measure, the Common Object Request Broker
Architecture (CORBA) is a success. Yet it continues to be
underestimated, belittled, or completely ignored. Some critics
deride the idea of distributed object computing. Others proclaim the
superiority of rival middleware standards: Microsoft Component
Object Model (COM+), message-oriented middleware, Enterprise Java,
and, most recently, Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP).
OMG
Declares Independence From Platforms
April 1, 2001, Software Development Times, David Rubinstein
Saying corporate CIOs will need a software architecture to connect
what already has been built with what will be built in the future,
the Object Management Group Inc. last month announced its membership
has voted to accept the Model-Driven Architecture as the basis for
future OMG standards.
