Thursday, March 24, 2011, Arlington, VA USA

Hosted by
Information Exchange Framework (IEF) Working Group
C4I Domain Task Force
Middleware and Related Services (MARS)

Opportunities for Standardization in Information Sharing: Use of NIEM in Support of the Information Sharing Environment

Objectives of this session:

  • Highlight areas of focus for the Information Sharing Environment's (ISE) mission as well as NIEM's evolutionary efforts;

  • Explore opportunities for standardization and productization of capabilities incorporating NIEM in support of the ISE's mission; and

  • To update the NIEM and ISE communities on the applicability of current and evolving standards undertaken by OMG and other Standards Development Organizations (SDO). Explore opportunities for standardization and commercialization of capabilities provided by a combined NIEM and ISE environment

This workshop will engage with the broad NIEM and ISE communities of practice and exchange ideas pertaining to operational/business/technical needs and capabilities represented by evolving standards. The goals for the information exchange include:

  • Based on community experiences, identify specific areas for ISE and NIEM enabling standards, e.g.,

    • NIEM Profile for UML;

    • Business Scenario development;

    • NIEM and ISE Eco-system; and

    • Applications for Model Driven Architecture

  • Inform the NIEM/ISE community about applicable standards and standards related activities that are being undertaken by the OMG membership:

    • UML Profile for DODAF and MODAF;

    • Information Exchange Framework;

    • Model Drive Architecture; and

    • IEPD Standardization (OASIS).

    • Identification of gaps and priorities for standards development.

    • Opportunities for standardization and commercial products.

This presentation provides the history and standards sought by the Shared Operational Picture Exchange Services (SOPES) and the information Exchange Framework (IEF) initiatives at OMG. Both are are focussed in the evolution of policy or architecture based solutions for the delivery of information sharing and protection. These initiatives have a pedigree that encompasses the Structured Messaging, NIEM, CORBA, DDS, Army Tactical Command and Control Information System (ATCCIS) and Multilateral Interoperability Programme (MIP) and UML Profile for DODAF and MODAF (UPDM). ATCCIS and MIP evolved into a 25+ nation community of nations seeking to share situational awareness and enable collaboration during coalition operations. The SOPES and IEF initiatives seek to build on this pedigree and that of OMG to develop open standards for range of communities seeking similar capabilities. This presentation will explore the core elements of SOPES and IEF initiatives and how NIEM might exploit the architecture, MDA and Policy driven concepts and strategies advanced at OMG.
