Welcome and introductions to the Data Residency Workshop

9:05am Data Residency in Oil & Gas Exploration and Production
Claude Baudoin, owner, cebe IT & Knowledge Management

The oil industry is no stranger to the issues of data residency. In fact, the situation is quite complex because the actors involved include governments, national oil companies, independent oil companies, and oilfield service companies. The chain of custody and responsibility for the data is complex, and a conservative approach may severely limit the ability to deliver value-added services. The talk will sketch these issues and set the stage for future discussions about the means to do better data governance in an age of borderless cloud services.

10:30am Data Residency: Language and Implementation
Seth Proctor, CTO, NuoDB

As services scale to run across multiple geographies, several challenges arise. Some of them have to do with availability, some architecture, and some challenges are focused on data management. In that latter category is Data Residency, which focuses on where data is stored to meet governance and compliance requirements. While there is increased pressure to legislate, implementation of these policies is challenging for at least two reasons: building systems that can manage data at this scale and mapping business or legal requirements to enforcement and audit. In turn, both of these are hindered by the lack of a clear taxonomy or language to use in talking about the issues.

11:15am Goals of the Data Residency Working Group
Andrew Watson, Vice President and Technical Director, OMG

A survey of OMG Members conducted earlier this year revealed significant interest in setting up a Data Residency Working Group within OMG to address data residency problems. This session maps out the next steps, including how attendees can influence and benefit from OMG work in this area.
