Members of OMG’s™ Model Interchange
Working Group (MIWG) will hold an Interoperability Demonstration on
December 7, 2009 at the OMG Technical Meeting in Long Beach, Calif
from 09:00 – 12:00 PT. This half-day event will showcase the work
the group has done to facilitate interoperability between UML®-based
modeling tools. The group’s focus is on model interchange between
UML®, OMG SysML™, and Unified Profile for DoDAF and
MODAF (UPDM) -capable tools. MIWG comprises end users, tool vendors
and experts in the UML and XMI®
standards. For more information and to register to attend the
meeting remotely, visit
HERE.
Attendees of the OMG Technical Meeting are invited to attend the
demonstration in-person. To attend in person and register for the week long Technical
Meeting and other Special Events click

The MIWG’s approach is for each
participating vendor tool to create and export a model conformant to
a reference model, and then each vendor tool imports the model
created in the other tools. The
XML Metadata Interchange (XMI) format, the OMG standard for
exchanging models, is used by the MIWG to transfer the model data
among the participating tools. This
approach is being applied across a number of test cases representing
different types of models. The MIWG is currently completing Test
Cases #5 and #6. The initial test cases have focused on class
models, activity models, and composite structure models, as well as
the exchange of a generic profile. Issues resulting from the testing
are being identified and addressed and the testing results are
positive. These test cases are available on the group’s Wiki
page. Subsequent test cases will also be posted to the Wiki.
The format of the Interoperability
Demonstration will include a demonstration of the capability of
multiple participating vendors to interchange UML-based models using
XMI. Several tools will be demonstrated at the Long Beach venue,
while other vendors will participate over the Internet. The
demonstration will be available to view in-person or via remote
access; remote-viewing details will be posted online at the
registration URL.
MIWG participants include Adaptive, Artisan,
EmbeddedPlus, IBM, NoMagic, Sodius, SOFTEAM, and SPARX Systems. The
US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is
providing an XMI validation tool that forms a key part of this
process. Model Driven Solutions (MDS) has been providing additional
technical expertise and configuration management support of the
modeling artifacts.

The MIWG is periodically producing new test
cases to provide extensive interoperability test coverage for UML,
SysML and UPDM. Any organization wishing to participate in the MIWG
is encouraged to join OMG. For more information on OMG membership,
