13:40 – 14:10 The Role of Business Architecture in Strategic Planning
Russ Jackson
Export Development Canada

Still using value chains to figure out your architecture strategies? Does the business continually ask you what the plan is for your systems without letting you in on what objectives they're supposed to be supporting? At EDC the enterprise architecture group had been tasked with developing a strategy for overhauling the application space and we came up with one. Everyone thought it was ok. Then it went nowhere until we suddenly started reaching technology end of life issues. And then we realized the strategy we had couldn't really be translated into executable projects that easily after all. Today we have an executive-endorsed, fully funded 5-year legacy system modernization program in place that is directly enabling corporate business strategies. This session will be about how we turned the corner, by stopping the focus on Application Refactoring and focusing on Business Capabilities, Information Mapping and Value Streams.

15:30 – 16:15 Business Architecture's Role in Mergers and Acquisitions
Deb Boykin, Business Process Management, Director, Pfizer, Inc.

Mergers and acquisitions (M&As) are a major challenge for CIOs and IT, where conventional leadership and management techniques can often fall short. With M&As on the rise, and IT's integration role more critical than ever, it pays for CIOs to build their M&A integration capabilities using proven techniques. Business Architecture plays an important role when performing Mergers and Acquisitions. This presentation will explore the value Business Architecture brings to this activity through:

  • Establishing clear expectations for comparing organizations and processes
  • Determining opportunities for realizing synergies in regards to roles, systems, activities, etc.
  • Ensuring that the best processes are leveraged in the new organization
  • Determining the effort required to standardize processes across the new organization.
