Keeping
the Consumers Informed of Energy Use |
| |
John
Teeter
Chief
Scientist
People Power Company
John will discuss the relationship
between people and their usage of
electrical energy; the end to end
process of electrical consumption
framed by the ability of consumers to
access their energy usage information
(EUI); and the effect of sharing that
EUI with members of the value chain
related to energy availability in our
energy marketplace. We will focus on
information that supports stakeholder
relationships within the circular
energy economy. Focusing on
communities and the underlying
information technologies used in
sharing and supporting the consumers'
daily life-cycles. The Energy Services
Provider Interface (ESPI) Standard,
enabling consumer access to their EUI,
will be described within the context
of the national Green Button
initiative with emphasis on how this
will change the historic relationship
between the consumer and their
electric utility. Finally, how we
might leverage OMG resources to
articulate and standardize business
processes supporting these future
consumer driven energy markets.

How
Smart Grid is Enabling Active
Participation of Electricity Customers
in Helping the Power System Operate
More Efficiently |
| |
Dr.
Bahman Daryanian, PhD
Director, Smart Power & Power
Economics
GE Energy Consulting
The advent of Smart Grid is
enabling a more direct
utility-customer interaction, which is
transforming the utility-customer
relationship and transforming the
customers from passive consumers of
electricity who are only concerned
with the once-monthly electricity
bill, to more active players, who
manage their electricity consumption
patterns in response to incentives, or
event signals, or price signals.
The active customer engagement in
managing its electricity consumption
is the fundamental basis of Demand
Response. Event or price responsive
Demand Response is helping to make the
power system operate more efficiently
and reliably while reducing the
overall cost of the electricity
service.
This presentation will provide an
overview of the interplay of smart
grid and demand response, and the role
of analytics, data management, and
system integration in transforming the
dynamics of electricity supply and
demand.

PRESENTATION - Real
World Challenges to Implementing the
Smartgrid |
|
Christopher G Bull,
MBA, PMP,
Managing
Director, SmartGrid Consulting Ltd
Chris will provide an overview of the
prime technical components of a
Smartgrid solution, the practical
challenges with implementation and how
the Regulatory environment can influence
Smartgrid programs.
He will also make a comparison of the
USA with Europe and the UK, and
summarize what lessons can be learned
for deployments in New England.

Compliance and collaboration are major challenges faced by
the extended energy ecosystem. We will describe a potential
solution that can aid in addressing the challenges, and
present several examples of where the solution has been
implemented and by participants across the energy ecosystem.

Renewable
Energy Resources Change the Equation
for Energy Flows and Standards |
| |
Dirk Mahling, PhD
Director
of Distributed Energy Systems,
Fraunhofer USA
One of the defining elements of the
smart grid is the presence of lots of
smaller scale generation, including PV
on the roofs of private homes,
micro-turbines, small CHPs, as well as
wind power. With these smaller energy
resources and their distributed nature
comes the problem of managing a
distribution network that was
originally built to deliver power only
downstream, not upstream. By adding
energy storage, we see the emergence
of islandable microgrids and virtual
powerplants, which need to be properly
monitored and controlled. Recent
research at the forefront of the
integration of renewables into the
German grid, in particular around
IEC61850, openMUC, and OGEMA provides
data points for innovative
distribution standards.
