An interoperable clinical system of systems based point of care solution can meet the challenge and provide a pathway to significantly improve patient care, reduce cost and improve patient safety if it provides complete and accurate Data, improves patient safety, provides security and privacy of the data, increases efficiency, improves quality, supports real-time clinical decision making, provides a return on investment of the technology.

The importance of applying modern systems engineering solutions, such as interoperability, to improve patient safety and reduce costs was addressed in a National Academy of Sciences report entitled, "Building a Better Delivery System: A New Engineering/Health Care Partnership." This report details how systems engineering approaches can greatly improve the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare systems. One of the main points of the report is that hospitals and healthcare systems have evolved in natural systems from smaller cottage industries with procedures, processes and workflows in both the clinical environment and business environments that do not scale naturally. Therefore, taking the time to design systems and processes using systems engineering methodologies would prove to be advantageous. One area in which these methods will be very important is in the design of point of care integration of devices and their processes.

Ensuring medical device interoperability, appropriate point of care system design and understanding the requirements of today while planning for future requirements will enable transition from the current state of practice (a series of monolithic standalone systems) to a system of systems in the future clinical care environment. This presentation will outline the challenges faced today, the clinical requirements and a proposed systems engineering architecture which can be the foundation to develop innovative solutions to solve these problems.

The recent debacle highlighted the challenges of software quality in healthcare systems.  However, these challenges extend far beyond badly managed government projects.  Healthcare has lagged other industry segments in adopting recent advances for improving software quality, such as continuous improvement of both process and product.  Generally organizations building embedded software for medical devices have been ahead of those building business software for administering medical operations and billing.  This talk will review how continuous process improvement coupled with lean principles has dramatically improved software in other industry segments and will include a short case study from a medical device manufacturer.  It will then discuss the more recent focus on the structural quality of software, which cannot be ensured through traditional testing methods.  Structural issues related to Reliability, Performance, Security, and Maintainability will be discussed along with the costs and risks they affect.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a method of providing temporary heart and/or lung support to severely ill patients.  While life saving for the patient, it is a complex and demanding therapy for the caregivers, involving blood traveling outside of the body in tubes and then passing through an artificial lung before returning to the patient.  As there is no Food and Drug Administration (FDA) device approved to provide ECMO in the United States, individual centers develop their own ECMO system from parts that are FDA approved for uses in other clinical settings.  These part choices are often made with little insight into the unintended consequences and long-term viability of integrating the selected components.

This talk will first describe some of the challenges of ECMO and the some of the problems that Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) can help to answer. We will then describe applications of MBSE performed by Systemís Engineering masterís students at Georgia Tech in relation to ECMO. Finally, we will discuss the how this MBSE approach has helped to frame and address some of these problems, and how it can continue to do so in the future."​

By connecting devices, applications, and compute resources into intelligent machines, the Internet of Things will profoundly impact healthcare.  The OMG DDS standard is already playing a major role in this transformation.  This talk will overview the breadth of the opportunity by examining use cases in many areas, including:

* 911 tracking, dispatch and field communications
* Emergency medical systems
* Connected medical devices for patient safety 
* Whole-hospital data integration, including scalability, data discovery, and patient motion issues
* Imaging solutions (CT, MRI, Ultrasound)
* Surgical systems (surgical robotics, theater system integration, real-time video for medical)
* Treatment systems (e.g., cancer therapy)

The talk will review the challenges and approaches in real-world applications.
