Object Database Standard
Definition Scope
Meeting Sponsored by: Middleware and
Related Services Platform Task Force (MARS)
The purpose of this meeting will be to define what the scope of the new object database standard should be. We have already done some work in this area but more remains to be done. Our goal is to complete the definition of what will and will not be included in the scope of the new standard at this meeting. Once we have defined what will and will not be included, we can begin work on a draft OMG Request For Proposal (RFP). The RFP is the crucial first step to get the ball rolling so that object database vendors intending to submit and other interested parties can begin working together to develop a response to the RFP. It is this response that will become the successor to ODMG 3.0.The meeting minutes from the ODBT WG meeting in Orlando (mars/08-09-11) describe what has been done in this area so far. At this point, the Working Group has reached an agreement that several things should not be in the scope of the future object database standard and several things should be in the scope of this standard. An appreciable number of items have fallen into the "we need to think this through" category; which is where our efforts have been focused lately. At the last meeting in Orlando, representatives from db4o provided excellent feedback on these topics; this meeting is an opportunity to get input from everybody else: other object database vendors, users, and developers.
