I would like to present a case study of how three large organizations (financial, hi-tech/manufacturing, and retail) have tried to resolve security issue in their enterprise environments by using DOCSEC products and technologies at some level. Most of t e requirements came from the need to allow business partners, employees, and customers’ access to data that had traditionally been for internal use only. The case study would include the security problems that initially drove the solutions, the problems encountered in finding a solution, the actual solution and the reason why DOCSEC technologies were used. Also important to the case study would be the shortcoming of the current solutions, chiefly in the administrative arena and firewall issues that came into play. A what’s missing and needed section will discuss where DOCSEC products must move toward to p ovide more complete solutions: integration of security models, providing security toolkits for developers, improved administration, policy management, and scalability, etc. Many corporate managers feel that security in DOC systems is lost in a theoretical quagmire. Managers need more education from vendors and consultants on how to provide integrated security solution for their DOC systems and what the current limitations re. I will touch upon what causes these attitudes and important questions that managers need answered The case study will touch upon CORBA, and Java RMI for solutions, and reasons why DCOM solutions were rejected at this time.
