Recap: Reston 2013

Last month, OMG members gathered at the Hyatt Regency in Reston, VA for the March technical meeting. The meeting was one of the largest OMG has had in recent years with over 400 attendees throughout the week! If you weren't able to join us or just didn't get a chance to see everything that was going on, here is a mini-recap of the week:

A major thank-you to our Reston TC sponsors: No Magic, Prismtech, Accelare, Sparx Systems, Remedy IT, and Modeliosoft

Mike Abramson hangs out at the registration desk with OMG staffers: Lisa McAdams, Julie Pike, and Nancy Siegel.

Special Events

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the Business Architecture Innovation Summit packed in the attendees with late-comers being forced to sit at table-less chairs or line the back wall to listen to talks from speakers from Ford, Boeing, Mastercard, and more! The summit will be repeated (with a focus on Europe's unique business situation) at the Berlin TC in June; so if you missed it in Reston, you can catch it again in June! Besides the Business Architecture Innovation Summit, there was a Component Information Day-another successful event that will be repeated at the Berlin meeting. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the Semantics Information Day took attendees down three individual, specialized focus tracks: healthcare, finance, and government. The DDS Information Day on Wednesday and Thursday took attendees through a high-level tutorial, case studies of DDS's sucessful uses, and the ever-popular DDS interoperability demonstration. The first day of the event culminated in a DDS demonstration by PrismTech's OpenSplice.

Meet an OMG Member: Fred Cummins

Fred CumminsFred Cummins is an independent contractor through his company, Agile Enterprise Design. He also works part-time for Cordys and attends OMG meetings as a Cordy representative. We sat down with Fred to find out a bit more about his time as an OMG member:

OMG: Hi Fred! When did you join OMG and why did you become a member?

FC: I attended an OMG meeting in the early 1990s [as an employee of Electronic Data Systems (EDS)]. At that time, EDS had another representative participating. I did not start attending regularly until 1995 when I was selected to be the EDS representative. I participated because EDS benefited from standards as a systems integrator and because standards are of interested to EDS clients.

OMG: How has being a part of OMG helped you or your company?

FC: OMG participation was a marketing benefit to EDS in addition to providing insights and influence on trends and standards. Personally, participation gave me the opportunity to work with leading industry professionals, gain insights on industry trends, and influence the development of several important industry standards. I have written three books that have considerable content derived from knowledge and insights gained from OMG participation.

OMG: What project/specification are you currently working on with OMG?

FC: I worked on the Case Management Model and Notation (CMMN) specification that was recently recommended for adoption. I am still working on the Value Delivery Modeling Language (Value Delivery Metamodel RFP) specification. In both cases I worked on development of the RFP and later the specification.

OMG: Why would you encourage other professionals to join OMG?

FC: OMG provides an opportunity to advance the state of the art, learn about the technology and gain insights on industry challenges and trends while working with a group of very knowledgeable industry professionals. This benefits both the individual and the company she/he represents.

Seeking Participants: BPMN Model Interchange Working Group

The Business Process Model and Notation Model Interchange Working Group (BPMN MIWG) is currently seeking participants to join in the creation of an interchange test framework that will support, facilitate and and promote the interchange of BPMN models amongst tools that implement the standard.

"BPMN 2.0 is the most successful Business Process standard around, but there are still some loose-ends in the interchange of BPMN 2.0 files that require some attention," stated Denis Gagne, chair of BPMN 2.0 MIWG and principal at Business Process Incubator. "The BPMN MIWG was created to support, facilitate and promote the interchange of BPMN Models amongst various tools...All organizations-be they users or software vendors- are invited to participate. We hope that this effort will help propel BPMN 2.0 adoption even more."

The group is currently holding weekly web meetings and will have its first in-person meeting at the Berlin TC in June. All interested parties are invited to join. Visit bpmn-miwg  for more information.
