OMG Announces Availability of Whitepaper Developed Jointly
with The Open Group and the Integration Consortium

TOGAF/MDA Mapping Paper is now available online

Needham, MA, USA - September 20, 2005 - The Object Management Group™ (OMG™), The Open Group and the Integration Consortium are pleased to announce the availability of the jointly-developed whitepaper: "TOGAF/MDA Mapping." This whitepaper extends the synergy between OMG's Model Driven Architecture® (MDA®) and The Open Group's TOGAF Architecture Development Method (TOGAF ADM.) The paper is one of a series of joint deliverables expected to provide a seamless architecture modeling methodology, grounded in standard-based practices that spans all layers of architecture planning and development, from the highest level business modeling to the most detailed systems specifications.

MDA is a standards-based approach to system development, which increases the power of models. An MDA approach starts with the well-known and long established idea of separating the specification of the business functionality of a system from the details of the way that system uses the capabilities of its underlying platform technology to achieve that functionality. An MDA approach is independent of development methodologies as well as technology.

Complementary to MDA is TOGAF ADM, which explains how to derive an organization-specific enterprise architecture that addresses business requirements. TOGAF ADM provides a reliable, proven way of developing an architecture; architecture views which enable an architect to ensure that a complex set of requirements are adequately addressed; linkages to practical case studies; and guidelines on tools for architecture development.

The Integration Consortium is providing validation of the synergistic technical assertions being developed throughout this joint project by developing and applying test cases derived from its members.

This whitepaper is presented in three parts:

  • Part I: Introduction - An overview of project activity and a generic mapping between TOGAF ADM and MDA
  • Part II: Specific Mappings between TOGAF ADM and MDA Standards
  • Part III: A summary of applicable and either existing or future MDA standards.

The paper is available at either http://www.opengroup.org/architecture/wp or http://doc.omg.org/omg/2005-08-01.
