OMG to Host Webinar on Development of New Standard for XBRL
Webinar will be held on Wednesday, August 13, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. EDT

Needham, MA, USA - August 12, 2008 - The Object Management Group™ (OMG™) invites anyone interested in business reporting languages to view a free live webinar explaining a new standard development initiative for XBRL (Extensible Business Reporting Language). The webinar will be held on Wednesday, August 13, 2008 from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. EDT. After viewing the webinar, attendees are encouraged to ask questions of the presenters. To register for the webinar, visit http://www.omg.org/xbrl-pr.

XBRL is a community and a technical specification for developing business-reporting languages based on XML. One of the recommendations from the XBRL community based on that technical specification is XBRL's Global Ledger Framework (XBRL GL). XBRL GL is a holistic and generic standardized format for representing business detail that flow from process and industry-specific transactional representations to the end reports desired by the market and required by regulators.

Numerous parties interested in the value of XBRL GL for their business representation requirements have request UML® models to better understand XBRL GL and how to integrate it into their architectures and systems. For that reason, the XBRL GL Working Group has been working with the OMG Finance Domain TF to determine the interest of the market and identify parties that would be interested in seeing and taking part in the development of UML models related to XBRL GL and, in particular, a UML Profile for XBRL's Global Ledger Framework. The OMG Finance Domain TF has issued a Request for Information (RFI) as a helpful step in this process.

The webinar will be hosted by the OMG to help organizations with an interest in formal models of business, operational and accounting detailed information to understand and respond to the UML Profile for XBRL GL RFI. Representatives from the OMG and XBRL will help companies, software developers and others with an interest in such models to better understand:

  1. What is the value of formal models of ERP data in business?
  2. What is the Global Ledger, and what is its role in integration of business systems?
  3. What is a UML Profile, and how can it facilitate the implementation of XBRL GL?

Speakers will include:

  • David Frankel, Lead Standards Architect for Model Driven Systems, SAP Labs, LLC
  • Richard Mark Soley, Ph.D., Chairman & CEO, OMG
  • Eric E. Cohen, Co-founder of XBRL and Chief Architect of XBRL's Global Ledger Framework, and XBRL Technical Lead, PricewaterhouseCoopers

About the OMG RFI Process
OMG is an open-membership organization and welcomes any organization, government agency, or university to join and contribute to our specifications. The UML Profile for XBRL Global Ledger (GL) Framework RFI is currently available for general viewing. This RFI is seeking:

  • Expressions of interest in a UML Profile for XBRL GL
  • Expressions of interest in specific UML models of uses of XBRL GL
  • Sample UML models that illustrate how the Respondent envisions using UML to model XBRL GL-based information
  • Examples illustrating knowledge of XBRL, XBRL GL and/or UML
  • Experience in similar efforts, be it in the financial industry or any other industry, to standardize information related to the semantics and syntax of information.

Non-members may download information on any of these Request processes from http://www.omg.org/public_schedule. For more information on this RFI, send an email to info@omg.org.
