OMG and INCOSE Join Resources on OMG's New
Certification Program
for Systems Modeling Language Practitioners
Needham, MA, and San Diego, CA, USA - May 15, 2009 - OMG™ and the
International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) today announced that
they have agreed to work together on the development of OMG's new program
to certify Systems Engineers and other practitioners on the OMG Systems
Modeling Language (OMG SysML™) standard. SysML is a graphical modeling
language used to perform Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) - that is,
to specify and design complex systems that may include hardware,
information, personnel, and facilities in addition to software. The
program, to be called OCSMP™ (OMG-Certified Systems Modeling
Professional), will be OMG's fourth certification.
OMG, an international, open membership, not-for-profit industry
consortium, maintains standards for interoperability, modeling, and
process maturity including the Model Driven Architecture® (MDA®) and
Unified Modeling Language™ (UML®); in addition, OMG certifies
practitioners in many of these standards. INCOSE is a not-for-profit
membership organization dedicated to advancing the state of the art and
practice of systems engineering, in part through its Certified Systems
Engineering Professional (CSEP) certification program.
"It's ideal for OMG and INCOSE to work together on this
certification," said Jon Siegel, Ph.D., OMG Vice President of
Technology Transfer. "OMG standardizes SysML and currently maintains
three certification programs, while INCOSE maintains the Systems
Engineering certification CSEP. Working together, we can create a
high-quality certification that tests SysML and MBSE knowledge and skills,
augmenting the comprehensive core coverage provided by CSEP. This
maximizes the value of the CSEP and OCSMP certifications to the
professional who acquires both."
"We're pleased to be working with OMG on the OCSMP
certification," said Patrick Hale, President of INCOSE. "INCOSE
supported development of the systems extensions to UML that resulted in
the SysML standard, and has been a strong advocate of the use of
model-based methodology in the design and development of systems. INCOSE's
vision for systems engineering in 2020 and beyond includes the use of MBSE
as part of a comprehensive approach to engineering the increasingly
complex systems in our world. INCOSE's CSEP and OMG's OCSMP, together,
will provide complimentary certification of engineering core competencies
for systems engineers."
As one result of the cooperative agreement, OMG and INCOSE plan to
jointly award a special certificate to systems engineers who acquire both
the CSEP and OCSMP certifications. However, the CSEP and OCSMP
certifications themselves will continue to be awarded separately - CSEP by
INCOSE, and OCSMP by OMG - and neither will be a prerequisite for the
other.
About the OCSMP™ Certification Program
The OCSMP Certification Program will enable Systems Engineering
professionals to assess and demonstrate their knowledge and skills in
SysML and its application to MBSE, and help organizations grow their
capability in this critical skill area. The program will consist of four
examinations and certifications - The first two will assess primarily the
knowledge and skills required to read and interpret SysML models and,
building on these, the other two will concentrate on the ability to
develop models, and to customize the modeling language to unique
organization and project requirements.
OMG's other certification programs include OCUP™ (OMG-Certified UML®
Professional), OCEB™ (OMG-Certified Expert in BPM), and OCRES™
(OMG-Certified Real-time and Embedded Specialist).
About OMG
OMG is an international, open membership, not-for-profit computer industry
consortium that in 2009 is celebrating its 20th Anniversary. OMG Task
Forces develop enterprise integration standards for a wide range of
technologies, including: Real-time, Embedded and Specialized Systems,
Analysis & Design, Architecture-Driven Modernization and Middleware
and an even wider range of industries, including: Business Modeling and
Integration, C4I, Finance, Government, Green Computing, Healthcare,
Insurance, Legal Compliance, Life Sciences Research, Manufacturing
Technology, Robotics, Software-Based Communications and Space.
OMG's modeling standards, including the Unified Modeling Language™
(UML®) and Model Driven Architecture® (MDA®), enable powerful visual
design, execution and maintenance of software and other processes,
including Systems Modeling and Business Process Management. OMG's
middleware standards and profiles are based on the Common Object Request
Broker Architecture (CORBA®) and support a wide variety of industries.

About INCOSE
The International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) is an
international professional organization for systems engineers and
corporations that rely on systems engineering to create products and
services. INCOSE (www.incose.org) was
founded in 1990 to develop and disseminate the interdisciplinary
principles and practices that enable the realization of successful
systems. Today there are over 7,500 members, 55 chartered chapters, and
more than 50 Corporate Advisory Board organizations from government,
industry, and academia worldwide.
