UML®’s 15th Anniversary Quote Sheet

“UML has had an impact that far exceeded its original aspirations. Industry has been using it extensively for a wide diversity of applications, it has spawned a whole new area of academic research, and it is taught in practically every software engineering curriculum in the world. Moreover, it has had significant influence to other engineering domains such as systems engineering, business process modeling, and aerospace and defense.”

— Bran Selic, President, Malina Software Corp., Canada

“Fifteen years is an eternity in today’s rapidly changing systems and software engineering domain. The stability, staying power and continued dedication of the OMG member companies for continuous improvement of the UML specification, along with the expanding user community is a testament to the utility of UML for understanding and managing complex software systems. And it doesn't stop here. UML can play a continuing role as we explore new approaches to the analysis, development and deployment of dynamic, intelligent systems that address evolving client needs. UML provides the foundation for leveraging the proven best practices of the past that can help lead us into, and contribute to, the method and notations of the future. Happy Birthday UML, and many more to come!”

— Jim Amsden, Senior Technical Staff Member, Solution Architect for Rational Government Industry Solutions, IBM

“Having been personally involved in UML since its inception, while working with Select Software Tools, Aonix, Artisan Software Tools and now Atego, UML is a credit to the OMG. UML has truly 'unified' the modeling ecosystem and become the bedrock for not only software modeling but also systems engineering and enterprise architectures. For those of us at Atego old enough to remember the days before UML, we are particularly thankful and celebrate its 15th anniversary.”

— Hedley Apperly, VP Product & Marketing at Atego

“As one of its a proud members since 2001 Cephas Consulting Corp. congratulates the OMG on this milestone date and expresses thanks for its continuous efforts in bringing order out of chaos in the modeling community. We look forward to a sustained collaboration wherein we can leverage the increasing quality of the UML notation to build a growing offer of training and consulting services.”

— Cephas Consulting Corp.

“SOFTEAM has been one of the very early participants to the UML standardization process at OMG since the beginning. At that time (1996), SOFTEAM had a very advanced OO modeling tool called Objecteering, supporting the "Class Relation" notation and method. Objecteering already provided code generation capacities, and a technology similar to MDA and the UML profile technique. Objecteering has then supported UML and UML profiles since year 2000, and now has evolved to the Modelio (www.modeliosoft.com) modeling tool, which has an open source distribution (www.modelio.org), supports many of the OMG standards (UML, BPMN, SysML, SoaML, UTP, UPDM, BMM...), and is a very agile and productive modeling tool.

Thanks to OMG, UML is now a widely recognized modeling standard, which provides strong modeling capacities for complex systems and software, which is interoperable between tools, and which has a great potential for productivity and quality. This contrasts to the early 90's situation where more than 80 modeling languages where used, and where users where locked in dedicated modeling solutions.”
