Why Should You Become a OMG-Certified Expert in BPM (OCEB)?
Now that you’ve decided to certify in BPM, you need to pick a
certification program. (If you haven’t quite made your commitment to certify, read
this section first.) Why should you certify with OMG? What makes OMG’s certification authoritative? Here are some good reasons:
-
OMG is an open, vendor-neutral standards organization:
You can read about how we work
here. Over our email lists and at our meetings, our members -
including consultants, vendors, end-user companies, government
agencies, and universities - meet on neutral ground to
set standards that benefit the IT industry as a whole. Our member companies have been using
OMG's open, neutral process to define interoperability-enabling standards since 1989 – over 23 years ago. Our reputation for openness and fairness carries over into our certifications, giving your OCEB certificate the highest possible value.
-
OMG owns BPMN: Our members invented it; we’re the source for
the authoritative draft of the BPMN
specification; and we’re the place where you submit a comment if you think you’ve found a mistake in the document. The experts who conceived of and wrote BPMN still come to our
meetings, where they use our process to maintain the specification.
.
-
The OCEB examinations were written by the same people who wrote the BPMN specification: Our
panel of twenty-five experts from top BPM companies know the industry, and they know BPMN. You and your employer, or prospective employer, can feel confident that your certification is meaningful, and that your knowledge has been well-tested.
-
The OCEB examinations cover much more than BPMN:
The members of our panel of expert authors have played so many different BPM-related roles at enterprises large and small, they know the industry well and understand what a BPM practitioner needs to bring to the table. They’ve included these topics in the OCEB coverage at appropriate levels – look for business goals and objectives, change management, governance and metrics frameworks, compliance and assurance, and many more topics beyond BPMN in the coverage maps
linked from this
page. If you're a hiring manager, these lists of
topics will tell you what a certified candidates has studied and
learned in order to earn his or her OCEB credential.
-
The five OCEB examinations and certifications mirror industry job roles, knowledge, and skills: Above the Fundamental level, the program
splits into a Business Track and a Technical Track with an Intermediate and Advanced level in each. This allows you identify and obtain a certification that corresponds to the position you hold, or the promotion that you aspire to.
-
You can obtain study materials and training from
multiple sources: We publish a detailed
coverage map for each examination, with references, on this website.
This enables authors and training companies to produce preparatory
books and courses. Some of these materials and courses were
written by the same people who wrote the examinations. (These bear
the "OCEB Content Developer" logo.) In keeping with the
OCEB program's goal of improving BPM and BPMN knowledge and skills,
these materials teach "to the topic" and not "to the
exam", developing your understanding and improving your overall
skills as they also prepare you for the examination that you'll take
when you've completed a course or worked your way through a book. Of
course, because the topics covered in the OCEB examinations are all
important to BPM practice, you may decide to purchase some of the
primary reference books for your library, and all of the articles we
reference are available for free on the web.

Still
not quite ready to certify? Consider this:
Credentials are important in the BPM world, where practitioners may work on many projects for different clients or employees over time. Holders of OMG’s OCEB certifications benefit by gaining recognition for their knowledge and skills, and their demonstrated commitment to their profession. Your OCEB certification can open the door to job advancement and promotion at your current company, or help with new career opportunities outside. For the employer, certification helps evaluate both current staff and potential new hires, analyze performance, and motivate team members to enhance their knowledge and skills.
Your status as an OCEB Certified Professional shows that you have studied the knowledge and skills required to make you a more attractive candidate for hiring and promotion.
OCEB Tracks and Levels
