Legacy transformation is the process of understanding and evolving existing software assets. Legacy transformation restores the value of the existing application as it extracts and leverages the investment in the intellectual property of the existing software to deliver new solutions that address changed business requirements. Legacy transformation is used when the regular maintenance activities can not longer address the changes. While for a large number of organizations the need for transformation of their business-critical software is triggered by certain external events (for example, the need to provide Web-access to an existing application, or the need to port away from an unsupported platform), for vendors of software-intensive products the evolution of existing code base is a vital part of day-to-day software development and maintenance. This white paper from the Legacy Transformation Working Group, explains why there is a great need for standardization of legacy software.
