Front Page Tips & Tricks
File Check Status
There are three icons that can appear to the left of a filename in the folder view of FrontPage. A green dot, a red check, and a black padlock. The green dot means that the file is safe to be checked out and edited. The red check means that YOU have the file checked out already, making it safe for you to edit. The black padlock means that somebody else has that file checked out already. When this is the case, you will be allowed to open the file in order to view it (a "read only" copy), but you will not be allowed to make changes to that file until the user has checked it back in.
How can I view my pages online before they are published?
Use “Preview” mode or go to File Preview in Browser.
How do I get a single line instead of a double space when I hit enter?
When you hit "ENTER", you get a paragraph break. This is useful if you want to separate two blocks of text, but not if you just want to skip to the next line. To do a "line break" press the "SHIFT" key, and while holding down that key, press "ENTER", this will give you a line break.
How do I add a description (Description meta-Tag) to my page so that the search engines will return that instead of the first lines of text from the page?
When you have the page open, right click anywhere on the screen to bring up the following window.
Click the tab that says "Custom" and then click the button that says "Add" under the "User Variables" NOT "System Variables. You should then see the following window.
In the box that says "Name" type "description" and in the box that says "Value" type a brief description of your page, generally no more than 250 characters.
Once you have finished, click "OK" and you are done. Your page description will now show up whenever your page is indexed by a search engine, making it easier to see what information is contained on your page.
