Getting Started With FrontPage

How Do I...

·         Open FrontPage and access the website?

·         Open an existing web page and edit it?

·         Create a new web page?

Opening FrontPage And Accessing The Website

To begin, open FrontPage by double clicking the FrontPage icon. Next, go to the top menu bar and choose "File," and then select "Open Web"

images

After you click "Open Web," a box like the one below will open. If you do not see the web you want to open, listed in the box, type the location of the web in the box that says "Folder Name.  After you have either highlighted the web in the list, or typed the address in the space below, click "Open"

images

You will then be presented with a window like the one below. Enter your username and password. If you are unsure of your username and password, please email to webmaster@omg.org to get this information.

images

After you successfully enter your username and password, you will be presented with a screen that looks like the one below.

To get to the "Navigation View" of the website, (which is the easiest for seeing how things are laid out) click the button that says "Navigation" on the left side "ViewsBar" (see next page)

images

To navigate around the Navigation View, you can use the scroll bars on the bottom and the right side of the window. You can also expand and collapse the levels of the navigation structure by clicking on the "+" sign to expand the level below a page...

Or by clicking the "-" symbol to collapse the levels under a page.

Congratulations, you've opened the website successfully!

Opening an Existing Web Page And Editing It

First, open the web as described in the steps above.  Next, find the page you want to edit, either in the folder list (which follows the same general format as Windows Explorer)...

images

...or by finding it in the Navigation View.

images

Double click on the page you want to edit (in either the navigation view or the folder list). That will bring up a dialog box that will ask you one of two things.

If the file you are opening is NOT currently checked out by another user (in your case it is only your co-chair), it will ask if you want to check it out. Choose "Yes." If another user has the file checked out already, the dialog box will ask you if you want to open a "Read Only" copy of the file. If you choose to continue, you will be able to view the file, but will not be able to make any changes to it.  It allows only one user a time to work with the file.

images

You can tell by looking at the folder view, if a file has been checked out or not. The following graphic shows the three status levels that a file can have. The green dot means that the file is ready to be checked out. The red check means that YOU have that file checked out. The padlock means that somebody else has that file checked out. If you try to open a file that is already checked out to another user, the program will tell you which user has checked it out.

images

After you have opened, and checked out your file, click the RIGHT mouse button anywhere on the page.  It will bring up a menu.  Select "Page Properties" from the menu.

images

This will bring up the following window. Click on the tab that says "Workgroup"

images

Please, make sure that the box at the bottom, next to  "Exclude This Page When Publishing The Rest Of The Web" is checked , before you save the file or make any changes to it. Otherwise, as soon as you save the file your page will be published (available on the web) and you might not want this file to be available on the web yet. Then click "OK"

images

After you have finished working on your file, you may save your file by either clicking on the disk icon, or by choosing "File" and "Save" from the top menu bar.   Than repeat the steps, described above and uncheck “Exclude this file when publishing the rest of the Web” box.

When you are done editing and saving your file, please be sure to check it back in. Do this by RIGHT clicking on the filename in the folder view, and selecting "Check In"

images

Congratulations, you've edited your page successfully!

Creating a New web page

Begin by opening the website (see above). Next, select the "Page" view from the Views Bar on the left side of the screen.

images

Next, click on "File" in the top menu bar. Then select "New" and then "Page"

images

This will bring up a window that looks similar to the one below. This is the Template Window. Please choose which template you would like to use for this page. Choose ONLY those that were created for your TC group. If your group is "Human Resources SIG", you have to use "HR Template", if it is "Distributed Simulation DSIG", the template is "SIM SIG Template".
If you are not sure, please contact webmaster@omg.org.  Double click on the template you wish to use.

images

This will open a new page with the style of the template you chose. Note the purple text on this page. These are comments that are viewable only in FrontPage (and the actual HTML of the page, so don't put anything nasty here!), and will not show up when viewed with an Internet Browser. These comments are useful to remind yourself, or others, what to do in a particular circumstance.

images

When you are done editing the page, please follow the instructions for preparing the page for publishing. Once you have completed these steps, please click on "File" from the top menu bar, and select "Save"

This will bring up the following window. Select the location where you want to save your new page, and choose a name for it. Web page names must be all lowercase (or else they get confusing and difficult to reach), and fairly short. Enter the name of your file in the text input box next to where it says "File Name"

images

You should also give your page a title...that is the text that shows up in the top of your browser when you are looking at a page. It is also the text that is returned when someone does a search of your site. This being the case, your page titles should be fairly descriptive, but not too long. To change your page title, click on the box that says "Change." This will bring up the following window. Enter the title for your page in the space provided, and click "OK"

images

Once your page has been saved, you can place it in the navigation structure of the website by first selecting the "Navigation View" from the left side Views Bar. Next, click on the filename in the folder list of the file you just created. You can then drag the file into the navigation window and place it where you want it to show up in the navigation structure of the website. Keep in mind that all "Child" pages located DIRECTLY underneath a "Parent" page will show up on the "Parent" page's navigation bar. So If you do not want the page to be reached through the navigation bars, you can just leave the file where it is, and not worry about dragging it into the navigation window.

images

Once you have dragged the file into place (an outline of the file will show you where you are at, and a dotted line will show you which file it will be connected to), simply let go of the mouse button, and the file will be placed in that position.

images

Congratulations! You've just created a new web page!
