Object Management Group Chairs Report on Technology Processes Underway at Burlingame Members Meeting

Needham, MA – January 8, 2018 – The Chairs of Object Management Group® (OMG®) Task Forces (TFs) and Special Interest Groups (SIGs) delivered updates about their standards work during a plenary session on the last day of the OMG quarterly membership meeting, which took place from December 4-8 in Burlingame, California. OMG is an international, open membership, not-for-profit technology standards consortium where members develop and maintain standards that influence the future direction of technology as well as impact industries including space, government, finance, manufacturing, robotics and healthcare.

The following Chairs reported on their groups' accomplishments:

  • Michael Abramson, co-chair of the Middleware and Related Services (MARS) PTF and Consultant at Advanced Systems Management Group said “Following the successful release of the Information Exchange Framework Reference Architecture (IEF-RA) this past June, the IEF™ Working Group issued the Request for Proposal for the Information Exchange Packaging and Processing service (IEPPS). The IEPPS is described in the IEF-RA.”
  • Claude Baudoin, co-chair of the Business Modeling & Integration (BMI) Domain Task Force and Owner and Principal Consultant at cébé IT and Knowledge Management: “The Business Modeling & Integration Domain Task Force voted to recommend for adoption the UML Profile for ArchiMate, an Open Group notation for enterprise architecture description, and initiated a new discussion on the need to standardize the specification of requirements. The Data Residency Working Group held another tutorial on this emerging information governance topic, and issued through the MARS Task Force a Data Residency Maturity Model discussion paper.”
  • Sanford Friedenthal, chair of the Systems Engineering Domain Special Interest Group (DSIG) and Consultant at SAF Consulting: “The SysML® v2 RFP was issued at the Burlingame meeting on December 8, 2017. This culminates a 1.5-year effort to develop the requirements for the next generation systems modeling language, which is intended to improve the precision, expressiveness, and usability over SysML v1. The requirements reflect lessons-learned from applying model-based systems engineering (MBSE) with SysML since its adoption more than 10 years ago. The RFP requires the specification to include both a SysML profile of UML® and a SysML metamodel, and a mapping between them. In addition, submitters have the option to specify additional features that include model interchange and formal semantics. A complementary RFP entitled the “SysML v2 API and Services RFP” is also being developed to enable interoperability among model-based engineering tools. This RFP is planned to be presented at the next OMG meeting in March, 2018, and issued at the following OMG meeting in June, 2018. The capabilities provided by SysML v2 should enable broader adoption by the systems engineering community and improved effectiveness of MBSE.”
  • Uwe Kaufmann, co-chair of the Manufacturing Technology and Industrial Systems (ManTIS) Domain Task Force (ManTIS DTF) and CEO at Model Alchemy Consulting: “ManTIS hosted a “Model-Based Engineering, Automation and IoT in Smart Manufacturing” Information Day. Presentations from this joint event with the Industrial Internet Consortium® Smart Factory Task Group are now publicly available. During the ManTIS plenary meeting, we followed up on the Info Day’s results and discussed future items for our roadmap, including MBSE and PLM interoperability, semantic and ontological modeling needs in manufacturing, and collaboration with other communities.”
  • Len Levine, retired Defense Information Systems Agency computer scientist, who previously co-managed the Liaison Subcommittee of the OMG Architecture Board: “Following approval by the National Standards Bodies, ISO/IEC/JTC1 has published OMG UPDM™ 2.1.1 as full international standard ISO IEC 19513:2017 - Information technology -- Object Management Group Unified Profile for DoDAF and MODAF (UPDM). OMG also continues development of this standard as a rebranded and expanded OMG Unified Architecture Framework® (UAF®) 1.1, scheduled to be submitted to JTC 1 as Draft International Standard (DIS) 19517.”
  • Jim Logan, co-chair of the Analysis and Design Platform Task Force (ADTF) and Principal Architect at No Magic, Inc.: “The ADTF recommended issuance of three RFPs: SysML v2, Precise Semantics of Time, and Precise Semantics of Uncertainty.”
  • Bart McGlothin, co-chair of the Retail Domain Task Force (RDTF) and Solutions Architect, SBG, Cisco Systems Inc.: “Retail had a productive week with a special “Reinventing Retail” workshop on Monday, and on Tuesday we had a full room as we worked through our Ontology, UPOS Fiscal Printer RFP and UPOS v2 Print RFI. Additionally, we completed two RFCs which were approved by the DTC; Unified Point of Service v1.14.2 and Video Analytics v1.0.2.”
  • Kenichi Nakamura, co-chair of the Robotics Domain Task Force (DTF), chair of the Hardware Abstraction Layer for Robotic Technology™ 1.0 Finalization Task Force (HAL4RT™) and Director of the Japan Embedded Systems Technology Association (JASA): "We discussed the issues of HAL4RT 2.0 RFC and the Robotic Interaction Service 1.2 RTF Report was submitted."
  • Bobbin Teegarden, co-chair of the Agents Platform Special Interest Group (PSIG) and Chief Evangelist at No Magic: “The Agents PSIG met to discuss the latest developments in agent and event technology, and supported the update presentation at ADTF by Manfred Koethe, for the AgEnt submission (initial submission to both the AMP Agent and EMP Event RFPs), and to plan upcoming further work on the AgEnt Submission.”
  • Ronald W. Townsen, co-chair of the Command, Control, Computing, Communications and Intelligence (C4I) Domain Task Force and Chief Engineer, General Dynamics Mission Systems: “C4I has initiated a number of new areas of work: FACE profile for UAF, RFP for General Sensor standards (follow-on to OARIS effort), RFP for profile to tag Technology Readiness Level in support of System Readiness Level within UAF, along with release of the Command and Control Interface for Navigation (C2INav) RFP.”
  • Charlotte Wales, co-chair of the MARS PTF and Lead Software Engineer at The MITRE Corporation: “MARS issued the first in a series of IDL4 mapping RFPs, the IDL4 to Java Language Mapping RFP, and the first RFP based on the IEF Reference Architecture, the IEF Policy Based Packaging Services RFP. MARS is also laying the groundwork for a collaborative effort with OMG Finance DTF: exploring what can be done in the area of Distributed Immutable Data Objects (DIDO), an emerging technology that includes distributed ledgers, blockchains, etc.”
