Distributed Simulation Facility V2.0 (Issued RFP)

(22 July 2002) DSF V2.0 Finalization Task Force Reports approved by the Architecture Board.

See the FTF Page for more information.

(7 February 2002) DSF V2.0 Becomes Adopted Technology

After passing the recommendation vote of the Domain Technology Committee and approval of the implementation plans by the Business Committee, the Board of Directors approved the DMSO submission as Adopted Technology. A Finalization Task Force has been formed to bring the standard to "Available Technology" status.

Congratulations and Thanks to Fred Kuhl of the DMSO for a job well done.

(15 November 2001) Recommended for Adoption in Dublin

The Defense Modeling and Simulation Office (DMSO) Submission to the ManTIS in response to its Distributed Simulation System V2.0 Request for Proposal (RFP) was recommended by the Task Force to the Domain Technical Committee (DTC) for adoption.

The Revised Submission had been reviewed by the task force over the last several months. Since an intervening meeting was not held since the last revised submission, a Vote-to-Vote was held and successfully passed. The Task Force subsequently held the vote to recommend to adopt the technology, which also passed.

The technology is now in the 10-week DTC voting period. A successful vote in the DTC will then be followed by a vote by the Board of Directors after a review by the Board's Business Committee.

Background

The RFP was issued by the Domain Technology Committee at the Orlando FL USA Meeting, December 2000. Click for the Technology Adoption Schedule (Includes RFP link, Letters of Intent List, Voting List, etc.)

The original schedule was changed in the Paris ManTIS meeting, April 2001 to assure ample time for LOI responses.

The current schedule is (as of 3-May-2001):

Event Date
LOI to submit to RFP   16 July 2001
Initial submissions due   20 August 2001
Voter registration close   3 September 2001
Revised submissions due   22 October 2001

Objective of this RFP

The OMG Facility for Distributed Simulation Systems was adopted in November 1998. It defines a facility (a group of interfaces to be implemented together) to allow a group of computer simulations to interoperate to form a larger simulation system. This RFP solicits proposals to modify or extend the adopted Facility for Distributed Simulation Systems to accomplish the following: Allow users of the facility to define their own implementation of an abstract logical time Simplify the use of the Data Distribution Management services, and make it easier to extend their use in one federation to another Bring type safety to the various kinds of handles, e.g., object and interaction class handles, etc. Provide a coherent set of data types for use by the Management Object Model Clarify the meaning of the specification in various details to increase the support of interoperability Align the specification with the IEEE specification for the Modeling and Simulation (M&S) High Level Architecture (HLA)

Past Activities

Adopted Technology: Facility for Distributed Simulation Systems

For official documentation for the OMG Standard Adopted Technology see Distributed Simulation Systems V1.0

The ManTIS sponsored a Request for Comment (RFC) on behalf of the Simulation SIG (SimSIG) that proposed a standard for an architecture for federating simulation platforms. Called the High Level Architecture, or HLA, (see mfg/98-02-05 for a brief overview or go here for a complete description), the Facility for Distributed Simulation Systems RFC is based on work done by DoD's Defense Modeling and Simulation Office (DMSO). The Architecture Board approved the RFC subject to the Errata (ab/98-06-02), and motion to issue this RFC by the Domain Technical Committee was begun at its June, 1998 meeting. The RFC was adopted by the OMG through vote of its Board of Directors on 10 November 1998

Simulation Request for Information (RFI)

A Request for Information (RFI) has been issued that solicits information about requirements, projects and products that will provide guidance for simulation object system interoperability. The RFI is now closed and is available as mfg/98-04-04.
