Object Management Group Releases Two Retail Technology Standards
UnifiedPOS and ARTS XML Video Analytics go through OMG standardization process in record time

Needham, MA – September 10, 2018 – Object Management Group® (OMG®) an international, open membership, not-for-profit technology standards consortium, today announced the successful adoption of two retail standards in the short span of ten months.

Chartered in June 2017, the OMG Retail Domain Task Force (RDTF) has its origins in the Association for Retail Technology Standards (ARTS), and develops and maintains a large body of work in retail-specific data standards. UnifiedPOS, a keystone standard in this body of work, and Video Analytics, a standard that enables multi-vendor interoperability for advanced analytics like facial recognition, people/demographic counting, and hazard identification, were both adopted at the June 2018 OMG Technical Committee meeting held in Boston.

"ARTS released the first version of UnifiedPOS in 1999, and it is now the de facto global standard for interoperability of 36 devices at the Point of Service," noted Bart McGlothin, Security Architect at Cisco and RDTF co-chair. "Bringing UnifiedPOS through the recognized OMG process ensures that it will continue to be supported and to evolve."

“We use the Video Analytics standard to drive use-cases and requirements for a number of technologies we develop for the retail industry,” said Andy Mattice, Product Manager, Publishing Platform at Lexmark and a longtime retail standards contributor. “An example is the use of high density barcodes to help robotic vision recognize product locations, descriptions and prices at the shelf-edge for store mapping, price verification, plan-o-gram audit and inventory tracking.”

Chaired by John Glaubitz of Vertex Inc., Bart McGlothin of Cisco Systems, and Leonid Rubakhin of Aptos, the RDTF has attracted a cross section of more than 70 retailers and technology vendors around the world. Companies who were members of NRF when OMG partnered with NRF to manage the retail standards in June 2017 are eligible for a free membership through June 2019.
