Object Management Group Issues RFP for New Retail Standard
New Digital Receipt API Specification will help retailers extend the retailer-customer relationship beyond the original sale

NEEDHAM, Mass. – April 16, 2019 – The Object Management Group® (OMG®), an international, open membership, not-for-profit technology standards consortium, issued a Digital Receipt API v1.0 RFP to seek submissions for API specifications that support sharing complete digital receipt data in a secure manner, translate the existing ARTS Digital Receipt standard to JSON to support cloud computing and smartphones, and specify a common core of data elements, such as date, time, location, and items purchased, which can be enriched and extended in a standard fashion with local requirements such as tax regulations.

A revised Digital Receipt standard can play an important role in allowing retailers to offer personalized, relevant communications and extend the retailer-customer relationship beyond the original sale. It is also a valuable source of data to retailers and for product and service development, and to consumers as a means of managing household finances. Finally, for application solution providers, a standard API makes it easier to incorporate digital receipts across platforms, reducing technical development costs, improving speed to market, and facilitating global business development.

“Mass marketing is not the effective tool it once was ─ retailers are under pressure to offer personalized and relevant communications to their customers,” noted Masanori Sambe, member of the OMG Retail Domain Task Force, and Senior Chief Specialist, Retail Solutions Business Group at the Toshiba TEC Corporation. “Digital receipts offer retailers the ability to extend the relationship to the customer beyond the sale, and an update to a streamlined API makes it faster and less expensive to implement.”

Both members and non-members of OMG can participate in the process by submitting a Letter of Intent by June 21, 2019. In order to become a submitter, individually or as part of a submission team, companies must become members of OMG by the initial submission deadline currently set to August 12, 2019.

In partnership with the National Retail Federation. OMG took over the management of the ARTS standards in February 2017.
