Systems Modeling Language™ v2 (SysML®v2) Certification

Overview of Systems Modeling Language™ v2 (SysML®v2) Certification

The OMG's formal adoption of SysMLv2.0 last year represents the most significant evolution of SysML since its initial release in 2007.

SysMLv2 is not just an incremental update — it is a ground-up redesign that addresses longstanding limitations in precision, expressiveness, and tool interoperability that have constrained MBSE adoption at scale. In response to this milestone, the OMG is developing a SysMLv2 certification exam series led by academic and industry MBSE experts. These new credentials will certify that an individual possesses validated knowledge of SysMLv2 as defined in the formal OMG specification — providing employers, program offices, and procurement authorities with a reliable, independent v2 proficiency benchmark. The SysMLv2 certification series is independent of and complementary to the existing OCSMP certification series. Both series will remain active and relevant as the industry transitions to SysMLv2, with demand for v2 certification expected to grow steadily as organizational adoption accelerates. Existing OCSMP certifications will not be superseded. However, OCSMP certified practitioners are strongly encouraged to pursue v2 certification as the industry transitions.

New practitioners may enter either certification exam series based on the SysML version in use within their organization. The entry-level SysMLv2 Model User certification exam will be available in June 2, 2026 and will recognize individuals who can effectively understand SysMLv2 models in a systems engineering context. The certified individual will have demonstrated they can interpret core SysMLv2 concepts including modeling structure, behavior, requirements, analysis cases, verification cases, and others that are expressed in both the SysML v2 graphical and textual syntax.

The SysMLv2 Model User certification is ideal for engineers, project managers, and analysts working within MBSE-driven organizations. Those with a valid OCSMP certificate will receive a significant discount if they choose to take the SysMLv2 Model User certification exam. The SysMLv2 Model Builder Fundamental exam is currently in development by the SysMLv2 Certification Working Group (SCWG), with an anticipated release in 2027.

The SysMLv2 Model User certification exam (prerequisite to upcoming SysMLv2 MB exams) tests an individual's ability to effectively read and interpret SysMLv2 models. Earners will have proven they understand core SysMLv2 concepts — including parts, connections, actions, and requirements — and can navigate model repositories, extract meaningful system information, and communicate findings to stakeholders.
